Rfed Cross Aids Victims Of Tornado In South Florida. the Bed Cross has set up. for, weeks of family recovery operations for victims of Monday tornadoes, with registration centers centers throughout the storm areas, and 23 disaster specialists are assigned to help local chap ters in this phase of the relief operation, C. Ralph Barlow of Atlanta, disaster director for the ARC Southeastern Area, re ports. George Peterson of At lanta is state relief director with headquarters in Tampa. Meanwhile, shelters continue in operation at Tampa and Lake land, as do eleven emergency vehicles equipped and staffed for feeding and first aid services to storm victims and clean-up workers, Barlow said. Feeding, medical, clothing, welfare in quiry, housing and other im mediately needed services are given. Robert F. Shea of Washing ton, B. C., vice president of the Red Cross, during a tour of the storm areas Tuesday urged all stricken families to make their needs known at one of the Red Cross centers. “Our workers will supplment family resources in meeting these needs and will remain on the job for several weeks or until help needed is given.” Family recovery assistance will include funds and guid ance in reconstruction of homes and small businesses, refurnish ing, long-term medical care, temporary housing and other maintenance, occupational and other storm-caused needs. Red Cross surveys show 283 homes and 114 house trailers destroyed, 450 homes and 140 trailers with major damage, and more than 600 homes with minor damage, 23 small busi nesses destroyed or with major damage. By early Tuesday, more than 60 families already had request ed recovery assistance. Governor Haydon Burns is sued a proclamation Wednesday morning naming the Red Cross as the official agency to help stricken families in recovery. Egg Cooking Contest Time V Is On The Way It’s Egg Cooking Contest time again in the state of North Car olina. Time for “Eggs” to be spotlighted as Junior contest ants search their minds and dolls for creative recipes. Hie contestants this year will be competing for scholarships to the school of their choice. First place winner will receive a $500 scholarship to the school of his or her choice plus an expense paid trip to Chicago in August to compete in the National con test for a $500 Shopping Spree. Second and third place winners will receive a $250 and $100 scholarship in that order. The scholarships will be put into a trust fund and allowed to ac cumulate interest until the win ner is ready to use it There has been a change in both state and national con tests. This year the Egg Cook ing' Contests are open to just Junior Contestants, ranging in age from 10 through 18 and not 19 by December 31, 1968. The 1966 State Egg Cooking Contest Cook-offs will be held ‘Wednesday, July 13, 1966 at the Jack Tar-Hotel and Motor Lodge in Durham. There will be 8 contestants competing for the grand prizes. Entry blanks may be obtained from Home Economics Teachers, Home Ec onomics Extension Agents, Ag ricultural Teachers, or fay writ ing to Eggs, P. O. Box 10312, Baleigh, North Carolina. The North Carolina Egg Cooking Contest is sponsored by the North Carolina Egg Marketing Association,. * f, f, v fk * NC 16 Will Be dosed For Eighteen Months Raleigh—The State Highway Commission announced that NC 16 from Wilkesboro to a point near Taylorsville will be dosed to thru traffic beginning April 13, 1966, to November, 1967, for reconstruction. Traffic will be detoured via NC-18 to Le ! notr; US421 to Hickory and Conover, 1-40 to NO90; and NC-90 to Taylorsville. Local traffic will be maintained.
